Lesson Planning Standard 2: Written Communication

Written communication is a skill that most students lack. Most of the students hate writing, but, in the other hand, they text, write comments in social networks, and write e-mails. I don’t understand why they don’t like it, and is what they do every day for hours. This is why it is highly important for teachers to help students revive the desire of writing inside the classroom. Students use writing every day, and teachers must be able to help the students master the skill properly. BEST – The lesson plan that I chose was about concluding a writing essay. The students were able to sit with peers to revise edit, and finally publish their essays. The class consisted of finishing their essays. Students were very anxious of finishing because they wanted me to read their essays. It was an amazing feeling watching the students concentrated in their essays, and being able to write their concluding paragraphs, revising, editing, and publishing their work. It was a quick task, because during the process the students revised and edit their complete essay. I believe that what helped my lesson to be effective and motivating for the students was the peer evaluation process. LEAST – The reason I picked this lesson as my least effective is because the students weren’t able to identify the thesis statement of an essay. After not being able to identity and write down a thesis statement, it was very difficult for the students to begin the introduction of their essays. It was a difficult task. I needed to extend my lesson and bring different activities to the students, in order to use different strategies.
