Teaching Philosophy

Many professional teachers have different ways of beliefs, in regards to the teaching profession. This diverse belief makes teaching creative and different. Teachers may see teaching as a profession, but I have a different perspective. I believe that teaching is more than a work or a profession. Teaching, in my opinion, is a way of living; a life style. A teacher must be aware of the different amount of ways of learning. I see the students as individuals that have their own style and ways of learning. The different style of learning is well explained by Howard Garner in his “Multiple Intelligences theory”. In the other hand, even though I feel this way, I can’t give the students a different class individually. Now, this is where Constructivism takes place in my philosophy. I am a firm believer of this school of thought. In order to reach the student’s learning style, I can address their skills by facilitating the students with the opportunity to construct their knowledge following their style. This way the students can actually come up with an answer or apply what they have learned by using his skills. I believe that this applies learning. I believe that the best way to make students value their knowledge is by making the students owners of their learning process. I have learned during my courses at the UPR-H that the purpose of teaching is to facilitate learning. Teachers are meant to be facilitators of learning. Teachers must guide students through their process, by enhancing them with the proper tools to continue with their journey of knowledge.
